PTI Halts Opposition Leader Nominations Amid Internal Debate
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has paused the nomination of Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Azam Swati as opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate, citing pending appeals.
“No new nominations will be made until the appeals of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz are resolved,” the party’s political committee said.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja added that the party leadership continues to support the current opposition leaders. “Our founder has suggested new names for these positions,” Raja said, expressing hope that the court would decide the matter in the party’s favor.
The decision comes amid reported internal disagreements within PTI over founder Imran Khan’s choice of Mahmood Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. Sources say some party members questioned the nomination, arguing that the party already has capable candidates for the role.
The matter was discussed in PTI’s political and parliamentary committees, where several members voiced concerns. However, some lawmakers emphasized that Imran Khan’s decision should be treated as final and binding, despite his incarceration.
Earlier, Imran Khan had nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the National Assembly and Azam Khan Swati for the Senate opposition leadership positions.
