PTI Proposes New Names for Punjab Opposition Leader Amid Internal Dispute
The political committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has submitted a list of potential candidates for the position of Opposition Leader in Punjab. The names include Moin Riaz, Ali Imtiaz, Ejaz Shafi, Sheikh Imtiaz, and Rana Shehbaz.
The party’s founder, Imran Khan, is expected to select the final candidate from this list. PTI is required to finalize and nominate the Opposition Leader before the next session of the Punjab Assembly.
This move comes after PTI suspended the nominations of Mehmood Achakzai and Azam Swati as leaders of the opposition in the National Assembly and Senate. The party’s political committee stated that no new nominations will be made until the appeals of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz are resolved.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja confirmed that the party leadership continues to support the current opposition leaders while also considering new names proposed by the party founder. “We hope the court will decide the matter in our favour,” he added.
The party is reportedly experiencing internal divisions over Imran Khan’s earlier decision to nominate Mehmood Achakzai as the National Assembly Opposition Leader. Sources indicate that several PTI members have voiced objections, arguing that the party already has capable leaders who could take on the role.
While some lawmakers insist that Imran Khan’s decision should be final, discussions within PTI’s political and parliamentary committees reveal a range of opinions, reflecting ongoing debates within the party.
