NDMA Warns of Severe Flooding as Chenab River Threatens Punjab Villages
Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab – Authorities are on high alert as the Chenab River reaches dangerously high levels at the Qadirabad headworks, raising concerns over potential damage to vital hydraulic structures. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that all rescue and relief operations are being closely monitored under the direct instructions of the Prime Minister.
Officials reported that the Chenab’s inflow and outflow have surged to an alarming 935,000 cusecs, causing floodwaters to inundate dozens of villages. Thousands of acres of crops have also been submerged, adding to the devastation in the region.
In a bid to control the rising waters, the district administration of Mandi Bahauddin carried out a controlled breach of the protective embankment near Qadirabad, diverting floodwaters to mitigate damage to populated areas.
Rescue teams have successfully evacuated over 100 residents to safer locations. Additionally, authorities have established five flood relief camps and nine boating points to assist affected communities.
The flooding crisis is being fueled by heavy monsoon rains across Punjab, combined with the release of water from India into the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers, creating a critical situation for Pakistan’s flood-prone province.
