Punjab Launches Electric Taxi Scheme to Boost Urban Mobility and Cut Pollution
Lahore: The Punjab government has rolled out an ambitious electric taxi (e-taxi) initiative aimed at reducing air pollution, lowering fuel expenses, and improving urban transport across the province.
In the first phase of the program, 1,100 e-taxis will be distributed. Interested applicants can submit their forms online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk
until October 5, 2025.
Out of the total vehicles, 1,000 e-taxis are earmarked for fleet owners, with each owner required to have a minimum of 10 vehicles. The remaining 100 e-taxis are reserved for individual drivers affiliated with Transport Network Companies (TNCs), including 70 for male drivers and 30 for female drivers.
Officials say the scheme will not only help cut air pollution and fuel costs but also provide citizens with modern, environmentally friendly travel options. It is also expected to create new jobs and enhance urban mobility throughout Punjab.
So far, the scheme has attracted 1,027 applications, including 2 from fleet owners and 1,025 from individual drivers, with a total of 5,401 registrations recorded on the portal.
To support the initiative, the provincial government has finalized a financing plan for electric vehicles. Under this arrangement, partner banks will provide loans of up to Rs. 6.5 million, while the government will cover the interest costs. Buyers will make a subsidized down payment, with the Punjab government contributing Rs. 585,000 toward the initial payment for EVs priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million.
The program is part of Punjab’s broader push for sustainable transport, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while creating economic opportunities for drivers and fleet operators alike.
