Flood Tragedy in Punjab: 18 Dead as Boats Capsize, Rescue Delayed
Bait Bakhshu Bhatar/Jalalpur Pir Wala, Punjab — At least 18 people lost their lives in separate flood-related incidents in Punjab as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc.
In the first incident near Tauheed Basti of Bait Bakhshu Bhatar, a boat carrying flood-affected residents overturned, drowning 14 people. Thirteen passengers were rescued by locals, but tragically, a nine-month-old baby also drowned. Authorities are continuing the search to recover the child’s body.
The private boat had been ferrying residents from Bait Bakhshu Bhatar to Kothal Hamza when it capsized. Eyewitnesses praised residents for their swift efforts in saving the majority of passengers.
In a separate mishap in Basti Khalilabad, Jalalpur Pir Wala, four people drowned in the floodwaters. Relatives managed to rescue one person and recovered the body of a 15-year-old girl. The search for the remaining two victims is ongoing.
Family members expressed frustration over the delay in emergency response, saying they had repeatedly called Rescue 1122 for seven hours with no assistance reaching the area.
The rising floods have left communities struggling, with many locals forced to rely on their own resources for rescue and relief efforts.
