Rivers in Punjab Reach Dangerous Levels as Floods Displace Thousands
Punjab – The Flood Forecasting Division has reported alarming water levels in several major rivers across Punjab. The River Ravi at Shahdara is flowing at about 145,000 cusecs, while at Jassar, it has reached 152,000 cusecs. Lahore’s Commissioner reassured residents that the peak has passed and water levels are expected to recede, adding that the city remains safe and under control.
Meanwhile, the River Chenab is experiencing extreme flooding. Water flows at Khanki and Qadirabad barrages have surged to 859,000 and 996,000 cusecs, respectively. At Head Marala, the river is flowing at approximately 191,000 cusecs. Authorities have warned nearby communities to remain vigilant as the situation remains critical.
The River Sutlej is also in high flood across multiple locations. Ganda Singh Wala is recording inflows of around 261,000 cusecs, while Head Sulemanki sees 109,000 cusecs. In Chishtian, strong currents have broken six protective embankments, flooding over 300 villages and destroying crops on more than 7,000 acres.
Local farmers have built an eight-kilometre embankment to safeguard homes, but officials warn that if it collapses, up to 20,000 houses could be at risk.

In Bahawalnagar, the situation has deteriorated further, with more than 105 villages affected and approximately 150,000 people impacted. Nearly 90,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes, and many areas remain cut off. Fast-moving water has also damaged temporary bunds, washing away homes and crops.
District administrations, Rescue 1122 teams, and the Pakistan Army are actively relocating people and livestock to safer areas. Relief camps have been established, and emergency services remain on high alert. Officials report that over 2,500 people and 1,700 animals have already been moved to safety in some regions.
Authorities warn that flooding may worsen in the next 24 hours as water inflows continue, particularly in the Sutlej belt. The government has urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate immediately and follow safety instructions as rescue operations continue.
