Punjab Revises School Timings Amid Flood Crisis
LAHORE – The Punjab School Education Department has issued a new schedule for all public schools across the province, effective immediately and valid until October 15, 2025.
According to the notification, single-shift schools will run from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM, Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, they will close at 12:00 PM.
For double-shift schools, the morning session will operate from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Monday to Thursday, and end at 12:00 PM on Fridays. The evening session will run from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Thursday, and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Fridays.
The revised timetable aims to ensure a smooth return to academic activities after the summer break, while also accounting for the province’s weather conditions and logistical needs.
However, the new schedule comes at a time when Punjab is reeling under massive floods. Overflowing rivers—including the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej—have inundated large areas, forcing the closure of schools in several flood-hit cities. The flooding worsened after India released water from its dams into these rivers.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an ‘exceptionally high flood’ alert for the Chenab River, warning that a massive flood wave is expected to reach Head Marala within the next 48 hours.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the situation was aggravated by heavy monsoon rains and the release of water from Thein and Salal dams in India. “All district administrations must stay on high alert and ensure the presence of commissioners, deputy commissioners, and field officers in vulnerable areas,” he directed.
Authorities are monitoring the flood situation closely and may revise school operations further in areas most severely affected.
