Punjab Bans Wheat Supply to Feed Mills Under Section 144

LAHORE — The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province, restricting the supply of wheat to feed mills in a bid to secure uninterrupted wheat stocks for human consumption.

According to a notification from the Home Department, the order is effective immediately and will remain in force for 30 days, until Friday, October 3.

“Wheat will now only be supplied to flour mills for flour production,” the notification stated.

A spokesperson for the department said that feed mills in Punjab currently hold over 104,000 metric tons of wheat, which they had reportedly planned to divert for poultry feed. This was highlighted in a report submitted by the Secretary of Price Control.

The provincial government stressed that the step was vital to ensure the steady availability of wheat, flour, and bread for the public.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) has raised concerns about rising wheat and flour prices. PFMA Chairman Junaid Aziz warned that prices may climb further if the government fails to make timely wheat imports.

He pointed out that while wheat is available at much lower rates in the international market, it remains costly in Pakistan, keeping pressure on flour prices.

Data shared by PFMA shows that between August 1 and September 1, wheat prices rose sharply by Rs35 per kilogram — from Rs62 to Rs97 per kg — while flour prices jumped by Rs29 per kg in the same period.
