Putin and Trump Talk as Ukraine Peace Efforts Stall
Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump recently had a phone call that lasted almost an hour. This happened while U.S.-led peace talks to end the war in Ukraine are stuck, and the U.S. has paused some weapon shipments to Ukraine.
Trump is unhappy with both Russia and Ukraine because U.S. efforts to stop the war have not worked.
After the call, a Russian official, Yuri Ushakov, said that Putin told Trump Russia would not give up its goals. Putin said Russia still wants to remove the causes of the war, which for Moscow means stopping Ukraine from joining NATO.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which started in 2022, has killed many people. Russia now controls large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine.
Even though the war continues, Putin told Trump that Russia is still open to peace talks. He said Moscow is looking for a political solution and wants to continue negotiations.
However, Russia has not accepted a U.S.-suggested ceasefire. Ukraine and its Western allies believe Putin is pretending to support peace talks while continuing his military advance.
Putin also told Trump that conflicts in the Middle East should be solved through diplomacy. This came after the U.S. attacked nuclear sites in Iran, a country friendly with Russia.
Zelensky Visits Denmark
While this was happening, at least eight people were killed in Ukraine on Thursday by Russian attacks. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Denmark visiting allies.
A Ukrainian official said Trump and Zelensky are expected to talk on Friday.
The U.S. decision to pause some weapons shipments has hurt Ukraine, which depends heavily on Western military support since the war began.
In Denmark, Zelensky told EU leaders that the delay in U.S. aid shows why Ukraine needs to work more closely with Europe and NATO. He also said that Ukraine has always supported Trump’s idea of an “unconditional ceasefire.”
Ukraine is now trying to get more details from the U.S. about what the paused weapons shipments mean. On Wednesday, Zelensky said American support is important for both Ukraine and the U.S.
Russia, on the other hand, keeps asking the West to stop sending weapons to Ukraine.
