“Will not be influenced or show preference to anyone,” the SC said in response to Imran’s letter

Supreme Court asks government guarantee that army will not play a business role

In response to Chief Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) writing Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, the Supreme Court (SC) stated on Tuesday that it will “neither be pressurized nor favour anyone.”

In addition, CJP Isa “shall continue to fulfil his duties and abide by the oath of his office,” according to the statement issued by the highest court.

In a letter to the CJP on November 30, former prime minister Imran advocated the release of female inmates detained during the May 9 riots. In addition, he demanded that a commission be formed to look into the disappearances of PTI political activists and journalists, and that the media be allowed to “coverage without any restriction or discrimination.”

Imran’s letter emphasized the need of upholding Article 184(3) of the Pakistani Constitution, which protects people’s “right to liberty, to associate, assemble, and speak” regardless of their political membership.

The statement released today acknowledged receiving the 77-page “undated” document that advocate Intazar Hussian Panjutha had couriered to the office of the chief justice of Pakistan on December 1. It noted that “surprisingly,” the document, which was in a “sealed envelope,” had already been distributed to the media.

The political party “whose behalf the document has ostensibly been sent is well represented by advocates,” it continued, raising more concerns. “On the military courts and the elections, its advocates conducted two significant cases in the Supreme Court, only recently,” the statement continued.

The SC statement further stated that the 84-page document is typewritten, includes tabulated figures, and photocopies, and is bound in a yellow paper book similar to those used for Supreme Court pleadings.

It also stated that the advocate who drafted the document is not identified in the document, nor are their contact details.
