Ravi River Flood Alert in Punjab

NDMA Warns of Rising Ravi River Levels, Flood Risks in Punjab

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning as heavy rainfall is expected in the upper catchment areas of the Ravi River from August 30 to September 3, alongside anticipated water releases from Thein Dam. Officials say these factors could significantly increase the river’s flow.

Currently, water flow at Balloki stands at around 147,000 cusecs. A flood wave is predicted to reach Sadhnai between September 2 and 3, with flows expected between 125,000 and 150,000 cusecs. The NDMA has cautioned that such levels could trigger a severe flood situation in the area.

Low-lying areas of Lahore and Raiwind are at risk, and districts including Kasur, Pattoki, Okara, Renala Khurd, and Depalpur may also be affected. Additional towns such as Gogera, Tandlianwala, Kamalia, Pir Mahal, Adda Hakim, and Sadhnai have been identified as vulnerable.

In a separate update, the NDMA reported a severe flood situation at Chiniot Bridge, where water flow has surged to 855,500 cusecs.

Meanwhile, in response to heavy rainfall, the Rawal Dam administration opened its spillways earlier today after the water level reached a critical height of 1,751 feet. The Assistant Commissioner of Nilore oversaw the operation to ensure the rising water was managed safely. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency teams.

The NDMA confirmed that all relevant departments are on high alert. Preventive measures have been implemented to manage the expected surge of water through the Korang Nullah. Residents are strongly advised not to cross the nullah or use makeshift bridges during peak discharge periods for their safety.
