PM Shehbaz Directs Urgent Flood Preparedness Measures in Punjab
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday lauded the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for issuing timely flood warnings, saying the alerts had helped save lives and prevent large-scale losses. He emphasized that the early-warning system must continue to operate with greater efficiency.
During a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the premier noted that NDMA has already dispatched tents to flood-hit areas in Punjab and instructed that the supply of other essential relief goods remain uninterrupted.
Shehbaz directed authorities to take urgent administrative measures to prepare for potential urban flooding in Gujrat, Sialkot, and Lahore. He also ordered officials to ensure a steady power supply, restore disrupted communication networks, and repair damaged roads without delay.
The prime minister instructed the Minister for Communications, Minister for Power, Secretary Power, and Chairman of the National Highway Authority to immediately reach Lahore and provide hands-on support to the Punjab government.
Citing the federal government’s earlier assistance to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he assured that the same cooperation would now be extended to Punjab and Sindh.
Shehbaz also underlined the need for timely evacuations, safe relocations, and effective supervision of relief operations. He urged elected representatives and government institutions to remain fully engaged at both district and tehsil levels.
During the briefing, NDMA officials warned of high flood risks at Head Marala and Khanki due to rising water levels in the River Chenab. Heavy discharges were also reported at Jassar and Shahdara along the River Ravi, and at Ganda Singh Wala and Sulemanki on the River Sutlej.
To support evacuation efforts, NDMA has placed 2,000 trucks on standby.
The prime minister concluded the meeting by directing officials to adopt a comprehensive strategy aimed at safeguarding lives, property, crops, and livestock from flood devastation.<
