Shehbaz Sharif Calls for Gaza Aid Workers Release

Shehbaz Sharif Demands Release of Humanitarian Workers Detained by Israel

In a statement on X, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the immediate release of humanitarian workers who have been detained by Israeli authorities.

Sharif condemned the arrests, saying these workers were only carrying aid to support Palestinians in need. “This barbarity must end,” he said, emphasizing that peace should be given a chance and that humanitarian assistance must reach those who are suffering.

The detained workers were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a convoy of over 40 civilian boats carrying around 500 parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists, including a contingent from Italy. The flotilla has been attempting to deliver medicine and food to Gaza, despite repeated warnings from Israel to turn back.

Italy’s largest trade union, CGIL, criticized the Israeli actions, calling the attacks on civilian vessels carrying Italian citizens “extremely serious.” Smaller unions have also voiced support for the flotilla and the workers aboard.

The announcement follows a violent general strike in Milan on September 22, organized by the grassroots union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), in support of Gaza and the GSF. In Genoa, USB has called for a protest at the city’s main port at 10 p.m. (2000 GMT), aiming to block the port in solidarity with the flotilla.
