Sindh CM Talks Port Floods & US Investment

Sindh CM Meets US Officials to Discuss Flood Response, Ports, and Investment Opportunities

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah held a high-level meeting with US officials, including Consul General Charles Goodman and Political Officer Jared Hansen, to discuss key issues such as flood response, food security, energy, security cooperation, and investment prospects in the province.

During the talks, Shah reiterated his commitment to launching the Keti Bunder Port Project, calling it a historic natural port and a vision inspired by the late Benazir Bhutto. He emphasized the need for a new port to reduce congestion at Karachi Port and proposed connecting Shahrah-e-Bhutto directly to Karachi Port to ensure smoother movement of heavy traffic.

On the investment front, Shah said senior executives from American companies would soon visit Sindh to explore opportunities. “US companies are keen to invest in Sindh, and we will extend full support,” he added.

Energy and industrial development were also discussed, with a focus on Thar coal-based projects, including coal-to-gas, coal-to-fertilizer, and coal-to-diesel initiatives.

The meeting touched on flood preparedness and relief efforts. Shah noted that while Sindh had braced for a “super flood,” the province was less affected compared to Punjab, thanks to its experience with recurring floods. However, rice cultivation in the katcha areas suffered significant damage.

Food security was another key topic. Shah highlighted the impact of last year’s wheat procurement crisis, noting that imported wheat costs the province Rs 3,800 per maund, stressing the importance of strengthening domestic food security measures.

On security cooperation, the Chief Minister acknowledged US support under the INL Program, which since 2012 has provided funding for police training, equipment, and women police barracks, including $20 million worth of protective gear. Sindh’s 22 prisons have been modernized, and a training institute for prison staff in Hyderabad was also commended.
