Sindh Braces for Possible Super Floods as Indus Water Levels Rise

Sindh authorities have clarified that, so far, floodwaters have not entered the province. Saadia Javed, a government official, said, “The situation will become clearer once the floodwater reaches Trimmu and Punjnad.”

Javed warned that a “super flood” could occur if water levels exceed nine lakh cusecs, adding that the government has already made preparations to manage such a scenario.

Officials in Sindh are planning evacuations in case the situation worsens. Around 600 locations between Guddu and Kotri Barrage have been identified for potential evacuation. The province’s katcha areas, home to roughly 1.5 million people, may also require large-scale evacuations if flood conditions deteriorate.

The Indus River is already showing a sharp rise in water levels. Commissioner Sukkur, Abid Saleem Qureshi, reported that 34 people stranded in floodwaters have been rescued. “Rescue teams acted promptly after receiving reports and safely relocated people from Imam Bux Jatoi Goth to their relatives in safer areas,” he said.

The commissioner also noted that residents in the katcha settlements are voluntarily moving to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
