Sinner Dominates Musetti in Historic All-Italian US Open Quarter-Final
New York – World No. 1 Jannik Sinner crushed compatriot Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first-ever all-Italian men’s quarter-final at a Grand Slam.
“It’s important to leave friendship at the door for the match,” said Sinner, who now holds a perfect 16-0 record against fellow Italians. “Afterwards, we shake hands and everything’s fine. It was a solid performance, and I got off to a great start.”
Sinner will now face the Canadian 25th seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime, in the semi-finals.
“Anyone in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam is playing their best tennis,” Sinner added.
Auger-Aliassime has beaten Sinner in two of their three previous encounters, but the Italian dominated their most recent meeting in Cincinnati last month, conceding just two games.
With the victory, Sinner not only advances in New York but also matches Nicola Pietrangeli for the most Grand Slam wins by an Italian man, now totaling 86. He is chasing history as the first man to defend the US Open title since Roger Federer’s five consecutive wins, concluding in 2008.
This season has already seen Sinner lift the Australian Open and Wimbledon trophies, though he fell to Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set French Open final.
Sinner stormed through the first set in just 27 minutes, racing to a 5-0 lead. The second set was tighter, but Musetti’s double fault at 4-4 gave Sinner the break he needed.
In the third set, Sinner again broke early. Musetti had several chances to counter, including four break points in the following game and two more at 3-2, but Sinner’s defence held firm. The world No. 1 sealed the match to mark his 26th consecutive hard-court Grand Slam victory.
