Sinner Claims Second China Open Title with Dominant Win

Beijing — Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner lifted the China Open trophy for the second time on Beijing’s hard courts, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. The 24-year-old had first made his mark at the tournament in 2023, and now joins an elite group of multiple China Open winners alongside Novak Djokovic, who has six titles, and Rafael Nadal, who also has two.

Sinner’s only previous defeat at Beijing’s Diamond Court came against his rival Carlos Alcaraz, who won last year’s thrilling three-set final. However, Alcaraz was absent from this year’s tournament, having captured the Japan Open in Tokyo earlier on Tuesday.

In the final, Sinner quickly set the tone, breaking Daniil Tien in the opening set and never looking back. The 19-year-old Tien, competing in his first ATP final, struggled to find his footing. Though he briefly threatened to break in the second set, Sinner regained control and closed out the match in just 1 hour and 12 minutes, serving 10 aces in a one-sided performance.

Had Tien won, he would have been the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament’s history at world No. 52, and at 19 years and 9 months, the second-youngest American Tour champion since Andy Roddick in 2002. Despite flashes of potential, the youngster could not match Sinner’s dominance.

This victory marks Sinner’s third title of the season, following his triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. With Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from the Shanghai Masters due to injury, Sinner now has an opportunity to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking before the season concludes. He will enter Shanghai as the top seed this week.
