Spielberg Says No to AI in Creative Work
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now being used more and more in Hollywood. But famous director Steven Spielberg has clear limits about how he wants to use it.
“I don’t want AI making creative decisions that I can make myself,” Spielberg said. “And I don’t want AI helping me think creatively either.”
He said this during an event where a theatre at Universal Studios was named after him — the Steven Spielberg Theatre. Universal has released many of its famous films, like Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T., and Schindler’s List.
Spielberg joked that his journey with Universal started in 1967 when he visited the studio as a teenager. He hid in the bathroom so the tour would leave without him, then explored the whole place alone.
At the ceremony, NBCUniversal chairperson Donna Langley said Spielberg’s legacy would inspire new filmmakers for the next 100 years.
Spielberg’s Connection to AI in Movies
In 2001, Spielberg directed A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a movie about a robot boy named David who wants to be loved like a real human. The movie came out long before tools like ChatGPT even existed.
Spielberg said the film was more about emotions and the meaning of being alive than about technology.
“Can a mother love a robot child?” he asked. “That’s what I was exploring. Not what AI is doing today.”
He believes AI can be helpful for things like finding cures for diseases — but only if used in a moral and careful way.
“I’ve drawn a line in the sand,” he said. “It’s not a final decision, but for now, I don’t want AI making creative choices.”
Spielberg Worries About AI Taking Jobs
Spielberg remembered how, during the making of Jurassic Park in 1993, he first saw how technology could replace human artists. He had planned to use clay animation by artist Phil Tippett, but instead used computer graphics to make the dinosaurs look more real.
“That choice made some jobs disappear,” he said. “I’m very aware that AI might do the same.”
So far, Spielberg has not used AI in his movies, but he said he might use it behind the scenes — for example, in managing budgets or planning.
“But I don’t want it in front of the camera just yet,” he said.
