The New York administration has increased security for the highly anticipated June 9 match between Pakistan and India in the Twenty20 International World Cup 2024 due to threats of terrorism.
A terrorist group reportedly threatened to launch an attack in New York during the World Cup. India must play four matches in the city, whereas Pakistan will only play two.
However, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has stated that she has been collaborating with law enforcement for months to guarantee the safety of tourists and residents during the cricket World Cup.
Hochul stated that there was “no credible public safety threat at this time,” rejecting the threat reports. She did, however, add that they were constantly watching the situation at all times.
“I have also instructed the New York State Police to implement enhanced security protocols, such as a larger contingent of law enforcement, sophisticated monitoring, and meticulous screening procedures. “My primary concern is public safety, and we are dedicated to making the Cricket World Cup a fun and safe event,” she asserted.
The International Cricket Council has declared that safety and security at the event were its first priority, even though supporting evidence for the purported threat has not yet been discovered.
“Our top goal is ensuring everyone’s safety and security throughout the event, and we have a thorough and effective security strategy in place.
As stated by an ICC spokeswoman, “We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event,” a cricket website reported.
India and Pakistan are scheduled to face off in the tournament on June 9 in New York. It is scheduled to begin on June 1.
When playing Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, India has won six times in seven tries, including the championship game in 2007 and the most recent one in Melbourne in 2022.
Three US locations and six West Indies locations will host the T20 World Cup from June 1 to June 29.
It is important to note that the top two teams from each of the four groups of five that comprise the 20 qualifying teams will advance to the Super 8 phase. At that point, the qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four once more. The top two teams go to the semi-final, where the champions will compete on June 29.
After defeating Pakistan in the championship match in 2022, England is the current champion.
