The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film; directed by William Friedkin and written for the screen by William Peter Blatty. The movie was released in 24 different theatres in the US and Canada later in December. Despite mixed critical reviews, audiences flocked to it, standing in long lines during the cold winter months. Scenes in which the protagonist undergoes a realistic cerebral angiography and violently masturbates with a crucifix caused some audiences to have negative physical reactions, including fainting, heart attacks, vomiting and miscarriages.
