Despite the tension between Pakistan and Iran, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said it is focused on holding polls on February 8.

When asked if the current state of tension between Pakistan and Iran would have an impact on the polls on February 8 or the election schedule, the ECP spokesman responded that the party remains committed to holding the elections on the planned date. He claimed that the ECP is preoccupied with election preparations and that the tension between Iran and Pakistan has not led to any proposal or thought being given to changing the election schedule.

The spokesman stated, “We are operating as usual and prepared to hold elections on February 8.”

When questioned, Information Minister Murtaza Solangi added that the polls will take place on schedule. He said that the elections’ timing and the tension between Iran and Pakistan will not change. The minister thought that things would now start to calm down between Pakistan and Iran. He bemoaned the fact that some people, including those in the media, are attempting to postpone the polls, which Solangi promised would take place on February 8, by whatever means possible.

In response to a question concerning the security requirements for the polls, the minister of information stated that the government will give the ECP the necessary protection to ensure that the elections are held peacefully. The minister promised that there would be no turning back from the general elections on the scheduled date.
