TikTok Travel Couple Misled by AI About Visa, Sparks Online Debate

A couple known for their travel content on TikTok found themselves in an unexpected airport dilemma after relying on an AI chatbot for visa advice.

In a viral video that has now garnered over six million views, Caldass recounted the situation with a mix of frustration and humor:

“I always do a lot of research before traveling, but this time I relied on the chatbot. I asked about our visa, and it told me, ‘No visa required,’” she said. “Now, I don’t trust it.”

The couple had planned their trip to attend a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico. At the airport, they were informed that while Spanish citizens do not need a traditional visa, they must obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before entering U.S. territory.

Caldass jokingly suggested that the AI might have given misleading information on purpose, referencing her past playful jabs at the technology:

“Sometimes I call it useless—maybe this was payback,” she said.

The incident quickly sparked online debate. Critics scolded the couple for relying solely on AI for critical travel documentation, while others defended the chatbot, noting that the couple might have phrased their question imprecisely.

Travel experts caution that while AI tools can be useful for general guidance, official government sources should always be consulted for essential travel information.

This isn’t the first time AI advice has caused real-world consequences. In a separate incident, a 60-year-old man was hospitalized after following ChatGPT’s dietary guidance and replacing table salt with a toxic substance, highlighting the risks of depending entirely on AI for important decisions.
