Trump Slaps New Tariffs on 69 Countries Targets Canada India Brazil

Trump Imposes New Tariffs on 69 Countries, Including Canada, India, Brazil

Washington, D.C. – August 1, 2025
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on imports from 69 countries, starting in one week. These new taxes on foreign goods range from 10% to 50%, as part of his push to reduce trade deficits and boost U.S. factories.

Key Tariff Increases:
Canada: 35% on some goods, up from 25%, due to a lack of cooperation on drug control.

Brazil: 50% on many goods, but key items like energy and aircraft are excluded.

India: 25% tariffs due to disagreements over farming and Russian oil imports.

Mexico: Given 90 more days to negotiate, but still faces 50% tariffs on steel, copper, and aluminum.

Other Countries: All other countries not on the list will face a flat 10% import tax.

Some products shipped before the new deadline may be exempt. The new rules take effect seven days after the order.

Canada Reacts
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed disappointment and said Canada would protect its jobs and look for new trade markets. Trump criticized Canadian leadership, saying it had “failed to cooperate.”

Mexico Gets More Time
Mexico was granted a 90-day delay after talks between Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. However, U.S. tariffs on metals and autos from Mexico remain in place.

India Talks Struggle
India’s goods face a 25% tariff after talks failed over farming issues. Trump also hinted at penalties for India’s purchase of oil from Russia. The Indian rupee dropped after the announcement.

Tariffs May Raise Prices
New U.S. data show that consumer prices are rising. Prices of furniture, household equipment, and clothes have gone up, possibly because of earlier tariff decisions.

Legal Challenges Ahead
Some judges questioned Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose these tariffs. A federal court had earlier ruled that Trump may have overstepped his authority.

China Deadline Approaches
Trump has set an August 12 deadline for China to finalize a tariff deal. Talks are ongoing, and some early progress has been made.
