Trump Reacts Strongly to Iran’s Leader After Conflict with Israel
Former U.S. President Donald Trump strongly responded to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel. The conflict ended when the U.S. bombed Iran’s nuclear sites last weekend.
Khamenei said Iran had “slapped America in the face” by attacking a large U.S. military base in Qatar after the U.S. airstrikes. He also said Iran would never give up.
Trump replied that he had saved Khamenei’s life. U.S. officials told Reuters on June 15 that Trump had stopped an Israeli plan to kill Khamenei.
Trump wrote on social media:
“His country was destroyed, and his three nuclear sites were completely wiped out. I knew exactly where he was hiding but didn’t let Israel or the U.S. military kill him.”
He added:
“I saved him from a horrible and shameful death,”
Iran said it might agree to a new nuclear deal, but only if the U.S. stops speaking disrespectfully about Khamenei.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“If Trump is serious about making a deal, he must stop insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader, who is respected by millions of people.”
Trump also said he had been working to remove some sanctions on Iran to help the country recover. But after hearing Khamenei’s harsh comments, Trump stopped those efforts.
“I received a message full of anger and hate, so I stopped working on sanction relief,” he said.
At a press conference, Trump was asked if the U.S. might bomb Iran again. He replied:
“Yes.”
Trump also said he wanted nuclear inspectors from the U.N. or another trusted group to check Iran’s nuclear sites that were bombed.
Some people have questioned how badly the sites were damaged, but Trump insisted they were destroyed.
The head of the U.N. nuclear agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said his top priority is restarting inspections, which stopped after the Israeli attacks on June 13.
But Iran’s parliament voted to block those inspections, and Araqchi said Iran might not let inspectors visit the nuclear sites.
Even so, Trump said Iran still wants to talk about what comes next. The White House said on Thursday that no meeting with Iran is planned yet.
