Trump Backs TikTok US Divestment Deal

Trump Expected to Approve TikTok Divestment Deal

WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to announce that a deal to separate TikTok’s American operations from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, will meet the requirements of a law passed by Congress. The law, approved in 2024, mandates that TikTok cut ties with Chinese ownership or face a nationwide ban.

TikTok, which boasts around 170 million users in the United States, has been at the center of heated political debate. Trump himself has credited the platform with helping him win re-election last year, pointing to his 15 million followers on the app.

Adding to the platform’s visibility in U.S. politics, the White House opened an official TikTok account just last month.

Although the law sets strict deadlines, Trump has repeatedly delayed enforcement. The current extension runs through mid-December, giving time for negotiations to secure TikTok’s U.S. assets, line up domestic investors, and ensure that any new structure qualifies as a full divestiture.

A new executive order expected on Thursday is likely to grant another extension, signaling that Washington is still working to finalize the deal.
