Trump Holds Early Morning Talks with Zelensky and European Leaders After Putin Summit
US President Donald Trump spoke early Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders to discuss his recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a European Commission spokesperson confirmed.
Trump left Air Force One at 2:45 a.m. local time (0645 GMT) and did not take questions from reporters. According to the spokesperson, the calls lasted more than an hour and included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The Ukrainian presidency said Trump first spoke with Zelensky before the European leaders joined the discussion. After the summit with Putin, where no agreement was reached on ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, European leaders held a separate call to discuss the next steps and review the outcome of the talks.
The EU spokesperson noted that European leaders had expressed concern over Trump’s direct outreach to Putin. Saturday’s call followed an initial exchange between Trump and the EU representatives, highlighting ongoing transatlantic coordination on the Ukraine conflict.
