Washington will welcome fruitful, amicable negotiations between India and Pakistan on Kashmir

According to Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, Washington would welcome “productive and peaceful talks” between India and Pakistan about Kashmir, but it is up to them to decide on the nature, extent, and speed of any conversation.

In answer to a query on future discussions between India and Pakistan on all matters, including Kashmir, Miller made a statement. This was especially relevant in light of the fact that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his newly elected Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif on taking office.

Given the ongoing tensions over a number of issues between the two nations, the timing of the welcome is crucial.

Speaking during a news conference, the spokeswoman for the State Department stated that Washington applauded the prime minister’s remarks.

“The United States values its relationship with both India and Pakistan, and we want to see them have a productive and peaceful relationship,” Miller stated.

He continued: “Of course we would welcome productive and peaceful talks between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope, and character of any dialogue is a matter for India and Pakistan to determine.”

On Tuesday, the Indian premier congratulated PM Shehbaz on taking the oath of office as the nation’s 24th prime minister.

The message on Modi official X handle said, “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.”

The US also greeted Shehbaz comeback as prime minister with open arms, promising to collaborate with the next Pakistani administration in “advancing shared interests” between the two nations.

In response to a query on corruption and abuses of human rights in Pakistan about remarks made by seasoned lawmaker Javed Hashmi over the dire circumstances facing the country, Miller restated the demand of the United States that human rights be upheld.

“So we have made clear publicly — you’ve heard me say from this podium many times, and we have made clear from — we have made clear in our private conversations that we want to see Pakistan respect the human rights of all of its citizens,” the spokesman said.
