In the nation’s capital, Washington, DC, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley overcame former president and rival Donald Trump to win her first primary.
She has emerged as the first female Republican primary winner in history.
Super Tuesday, when 15 states and one territory cast their votes, is a pivotal day in the protracted US presidential nomination process, and Haley’s symbolic win in the country’s capital comes just before it.
The community of Washington is firmly Democratic, with relatively few Republicans registered.
The BBC reports that Haley received 62.9% of the vote versus Trump’s 33.2%.
“It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos,” the Haley campaign stated in a statement.
The Trump team responded by saying, “Tonight’s results in Washington, DC, reaffirm the object of President Trump’s campaign, he will drain the swamp and put America first.”
It is anticipated that Trump would come just short of winning the Republican Party’s presidential nominee after reaching the Super Tuesday milestone. All of the early state primaries have already been won by him.
Super Tuesday is thought to be Haley’s final realistic opportunity to stop the former president from following Biden into the party’s leadership once more.
