Venice Film Festival Opens with Sorrentino’s La Grazia
VENICE – The 81st Venice Film Festival kicked off on August 27 with the world premiere of Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia, starring acclaimed actor Toni Servillo. The festival will run through September 6, concluding with French director Cedric Jimenez’s Chien 51.
The prestigious event takes place on the Venice Lido, a barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon, just a short boat ride from the main city. Unlike Venice itself, cars can reach the Lido, making it a unique setting for the star-studded celebration of cinema.
The festival is closely followed worldwide as it often sets the tone for awards season. In recent years, many Oscar winners first premiered here: eight of the last nine Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to films unveiled in Venice, while eight of the past 13 Best Director trophies were also linked to Venice debuts.
This year’s edition promises to shine with a dazzling lineup of stars. Hollywood and international icons, including Cate Blanchett, Emily Blunt, Lee Byung Hun, George Clooney, Laura Dern, Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler, Amanda Seyfried, and Emma Stone, are all expected to grace the red carpet over the 11-day event.
