Vijay Announces Compensation for Victims of Karur Rally Stampede
Karur, Tamil Nadu — Tamil cinema superstar and TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) founder Vijay has announced an ex gratia of ₹20 lakh for the families of the 41 people who tragically lost their lives in the stampede at his rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Among the victims were 18 women, 13 men, and ten children.
In a heartfelt post on X on Sunday, Vijay expressed his grief, saying, “It is an irreparable loss for us. No words can ease the pain of losing our loved ones. As a member of your family, I will provide ₹20 lakh to the families of those who passed away and ₹2 lakh to those injured and receiving treatment.”
He added, “This amount cannot replace the loss, but it is my duty to stand in solidarity with my relatives during this difficult time.”
The tragic incident also left 56 others injured. Police reported that the rally was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. with an expected crowd of 1 lakh people. However, nearly three times that number showed up, and Vijay did not arrive until 7:30 p.m., leaving attendees under the scorching sun for hours without sufficient food or water, which contributed to the chaos.
In addition to Vijay’s announcement, the Tamil Nadu government has promised ₹10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also pledged ₹2 lakh for each bereaved family and ₹50,000 for those injured in the stampede.
