PM presents relief package while visiting rain-stricken Gwadar

Following the devastating effects of flooding and heavy rains in Gwadar, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the deep sea port city in Balochistan and declared a relief package as well as a ration campaign for the families affected.

Speaking to the media in the port city of Gwadar, which has recently had extremely strong downpours, Shehbaz said that the government will provide each person whose house has been wrecked by rain Rs. 750,000.

In the meantime, the prime minister, who assumed office as head of state the day before, said that individuals whose houses sustained partial damage would get Rs. 350,000 apiece.

Families of those who lost their lives in the downpour would get Rs. 2 million, while each injured person would receive Rs. 500,000.

Shehbaz stated, “The [said] amount would be distributed within [the next] four days,” and clarified that the relief package did not just apply to Balochistani districts but also to other places hit by the rain.

In response to the people’s financial loss, the premier said that the province government will pay back losses of up to Rs400 million that resulted from the destruction of up to 83 boats.

The premier addressed the death toll from the recent rainstorm that affected several parts of the nation, stating that as many as 44 people had perished and 46 others, including children and the elderly, were injured.

The prime minister elaborated on the government response to the crisis, saying that 7,000 ration bags would be given to the provincial government and would be appropriately distributed among the underprivileged through cooperation between the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the government of Balochistan.

“The ration drive would continue till all the displaced people have returned to their homes,” he stated.

Prior to PM Shehbaz first visit to the province, the NDMA informed him about the rescue and relief operations underway as well as the harm done to Gwadar’s infrastructure.

In addition to directing authorities to use satellite images for early natural disaster detection and warning, the PM requested a thorough evaluation of the harm done to private property and a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of people impacted by the catastrophe.
