US actress and singer Zendaya remembered Cicely Tyson, who died on Thursday at the age of 96.
Tyson died at 96, according to her longtime manager, Larry Thompson. Tyson died two days after her memoir Just as I am was published. She gave her last interviews about the book, including a sit-down with Gayle King and an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan this week.
Tyson became the first African-American to win a lead actress Emmy Award when she was recognized for her astonishing performance as a woman.
Taking to Instagram, Zendaya shared an old photo of Cicely, paying tribute to her, and wrote, “This one hurts.”
Furthermore, Zendaya added that “Today we honor and celebrate the life of one of the greatest to ever do it. Thank you, Cicely Tyson. Rest in great power.”
Tyson’s manager, Larry Thompson said in a statement “With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon.”
“At this time, please allow the family their privacy,” he further said.
Besides Zendaya, Shonda Rhimes, LeVar Burton, Viola Davis, and many more stars paid Tribute to the “Cultural Icon” Cicely Tyson; the actress who made television history while forging a sterling career out of portraying women of strength and substance.
