Assam Singer Zubeen Garg’s Manager, NEIF Organizer Arrested Over Scuba Accident
In a shocking turn of events, authorities have arrested Siddhartha Sharma, manager of Assam’s top singer and multi-instrumentalist Zubeen Garg, 52, along with Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of the North East India Festival (NEIF). The arrests are linked to Garg’s tragic death in a scuba diving accident at Lazarus Island on September 19, just before he was scheduled to perform at the festival.
Earlier, Interpol had issued lookout notices for both Sharma and Mahanta, instructing them to report to the CID by October 6. Acting on the notice, Mahanta was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport upon his arrival from Singapore, while Sharma was taken into custody at an apartment in Gurugram. Both were subsequently transferred to Guwahati for questioning and have been remanded in police custody for 14 days.
The Assam government had set up a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Special DGP M P Gupta, to probe the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death. As part of the investigation, the SIT has also issued notices to members of the Singapore Assam Association and festival attendees, requesting them to provide statements.
The case has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community, as fans and fellow artists await further details on the tragedy.
