Ravichandran Ashwin Bids Farewell to IPL, Looks Ahead to Global Leagues
MUMBAI – Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), drawing the curtains on a decorated career in the tournament that began in 2009.
In a heartfelt message on social media, the 38-year-old wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now.”
Ashwin leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the IPL. Across 220 matches, he picked up 187 wickets and scored 833 runs. His journey began with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009, where he played a key role in their back-to-back title triumphs in 2010 and 2011.
Over the years, Ashwin represented multiple franchises, including Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (where he served as captain in 2018–19), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. He was re-signed by CSK at the 2025 mega auction for INR 9.75 crore, but his final season saw a modest return of seven wickets in nine games, with CSK finishing at the bottom of the table.
Despite the subdued ending, Ashwin’s IPL career is remembered for his tactical acumen, variations with the ball, and leadership qualities. As he steps away from the league, the off-spinner is set to continue his cricketing journey across global T20 competitions, embracing what he called “a new beginning.”
