Even if the UN and OIC pass resolutions, Bilawal says the polls on February 8
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated on Saturday that the general elections will take place on February 8 as planned, despite the possibility that “they” will receive resolutions approved by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) or the United Nations (UN). This statement came amid concerns about potential delays in the elections.
The comment was made when he was questioned about the Senate’s acceptance of a motion to postpone the polls during his news conference in Lahore.
According to Bilawal, the polls will take place on February 8 since the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released a schedule for the day.
The former foreign minister declared to reporters that elections would take place on February 8 regardless of whether they were able to approve a resolution by the Senate, the UN, or the OIC.
A motion to postpone voting in light of the nation’s harsh weather and security circumstances was introduced by an independent senator in the Senate and approved by the majority of the 14 senators in attendance on Friday.
On the other hand, a new resolution was presented in the upper house on the scheduled conduct of the elections on February 8.
In the resolution that was filed to the Senate Secretariat today, Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emphasized that holding elections is mandated by the constitution.
In the meantime, a motion was made to the Supreme Court to begin contempt proceedings against senators who had been engaged in the Senate’s resolution to delay the polls.
Marriyum Aurangzeb, the information secretary for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), emphasized that the nation’s elections will take place on time.
Speaking to the media following his appearance earlier in the day before a Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC), the former minister of information stated that the PML-N was the sole political party against the resolution.
“Even if other parties scream or cry, elections will still take place on February 8,” Marriyum declared.
Bilawal disregarded the prospect of a postponement of the elections, recalling Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s statement that the election date was “set in stone.”
According to the PPP leader, everyone believes the top judge’s statement and supports him in this case.
He expressed his confidence that Pakistanis would be able to exercise their right to vote and establish a government of their choosing, and that the general elections will take place on schedule.
Bilawal stated, “PPPP will accept the decision of Pakistani people,” but he also expressed his desire for his party to be given an opportunity to address national issues.
In response to a query regarding the establishment of fair competition, the lawmaker stated the PPP has had challenges each time it has run for office.
Although more candidates were disqualified in the 2013 elections, he added, other parties are arguing that their candidates have been disqualified.
Although the PPP has consistently called for free and fair elections across the nation, Bilawal stated that the party is now concentrating on its 10-point platform for the polls rather than griping about impartiality.
“Our 10-point agenda is our manifesto [for the elections],” he stated.
The politician went on to say that whereas Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) are running for office in order to keep their leaders out of legal trouble and out of jail, he will run for office in order to carry out his platform.
