Blue Jays Beat Astros in 10th Inning Thriller
Toronto Rallies Late to Edge Astros in Extra Innings
TORONTO – The Blue Jays staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Houston Astros 4-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday night, opening their three-game series with a thrilling win at Rogers Centre.
Myles Straw, inserted as the automatic runner in the 10th inning, advanced to third on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s infield hit against closer Craig Kimbrel (0-1). He then raced home on Tyler Heineman’s grounder to first, beating the throw to score the winning run.
George Springer provided a spark with a solo homer, while Guerrero added three hits. Toronto (83-61) had tied the game in the ninth when Isiah Kiner-Falefa delivered a clutch two-run single with the bases loaded. Reliever Jeff Hoffman (9-6) shut down Houston in the top of the 10th to earn the win.
The Astros (78-67) looked in control early. Carlos Correa blasted a two-run homer in the first inning off Shane Bieber after Jeremy Peña’s leadoff double. Yordan Alvarez and Yainer Diaz chipped in three hits apiece, and Diaz drove in another run with a sixth-inning double to make it 3-0.
Houston starter Luis Garcia left in the second inning with right elbow discomfort, just two starts into his return from Tommy John surgery. Rookie AJ Blubaugh stepped in and threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Bieber worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while keeping Toronto within reach. Springer finally broke through in the sixth with a towering homer, Toronto’s first hit of the game.
Houston’s bullpen faltered late, as Bryan Abreu loaded the bases in the ninth before Kiner-Falefa’s game-tying single set the stage for extra innings — and Toronto’s walk-off win.
