Braves Snap Losing Streak with Win Over Cubs, Snitker Reaches 800 Victories
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves (65-79) ended a two-game skid on Monday, evening their season series with the Chicago Cubs (81-63) at 2-2.
Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson powered Atlanta’s offense, each hitting solo home runs to spark the Braves.
Starting pitcher Spencer Elder (7-9) delivered another strong outing, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six over six-plus innings. Elder left the game with runners on first and third after throwing 89 pitches. This marked his third consecutive start allowing only one run, giving him a 1.37 ERA over his last four appearances.
Raisel Iglesias closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, earning his 25th save of the season.
The win also marked a milestone for Braves manager Brian Snitker, who became just the 86th manager in Major League Baseball history to reach 800 career victories. He is the third in Braves history to reach the milestone, joining Hall of Famers Bobby Cox (2,149 wins) and Frank Selee (1,004 wins).
The loss went to Shota Imanaga (9-7), who allowed three runs on five hits over six innings while striking out four. He retired the final 12 batters he faced.
Atlanta jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning on a rally that began with two outs and nobody on base. Albies launched a 435-foot solo homer, his 16th of the season, to center field. Ha-Seong Kim singled and scored on Drake Baldwin’s double, and Ronald Acuna Jr. ended a 0-for-25 slump with an RBI single.
Chicago answered with a run in the seventh inning. Nico Hoerner doubled, advanced to third on a ground ball, and scored on Matt Shaw’s sacrifice fly to shallow center field.
The Braves regained the lead in the eighth when Olson hit his 23rd home run, a solo shot to center field.
