Buccaneers Rally Past Texans in Late Comeback

Buccaneers Rally Past Texans in Thrilling Late-Game Finish

Tampa Bay (2-0) pulled off a dramatic late-game comeback, marching 80 yards in 11 plays to stun Houston (0-2), who had briefly taken a 19-14 lead following a blocked punt and a 53-yard punt return by rookie Jaylin Noel with just over two minutes remaining.

The decisive drive was led by Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who showcased his toughness by scrambling 15 yards on a critical fourth-and-10 before connecting with Bucky Irving for a 22-yard gain to the Houston 23. Rushing back, Kenneth White then capped the effort, combining with Irving to rush for 136 yards on 27 carries, powering Tampa Bay to victory.

Mayfield delivered a resilient performance, completing 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns despite being sacked four times. He also added 33 yards on the ground over three carries.

Houston had taken the late lead thanks to a 25-yard touchdown run by Nick Chubb, a surprising spark after the Texans’ running backs had managed just 32 yards on 14 carries. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 207 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-24 attempts, though he was sacked three times. Both teams failed on two-point conversion attempts following their late scores.

Tampa Bay led 14-10 at halftime, but the third quarter was a grind, with both quarterbacks under heavy pressure. Sheldon Rankins sacked Mayfield on third down, forcing a Buccaneers punt, while Tykee Smith and the Texans sacked Stroud on consecutive third downs. Lavonte David and Elijah Roberts also combined on a key third-down stop, forcing another Houston punt.

The Buccaneers, who managed just 28 yards on 11 second-half plays, finally broke through with a 22-yard reception from Mike Evans and consecutive runs of 12, 9, and 16 yards to reach the Houston 20. The Texans’ defense held firm in the red zone, and kicker Chase McLaughlin’s 38-yard field-goal attempt clanged off the right upright with just over a minute left in the third.

Houston responded with an efficient drive, highlighted by passes of 28 yards to Jayden Higgins and 16 yards to Dalton Schultz. A 7-yard strike to Nico Collins set the Texans up at the Tampa Bay 1, but the Buccaneers’ defense stuffed Houston on three attempts to regain possession.

The game began with a flourish from Stroud, who capped a six-play, 64-yard drive with a dazzling 29-yard touchdown pass to Collins, giving the Texans an early 7-0 lead. Tampa Bay responded with back-to-back touchdown drives, converting all four third downs along the way. Mayfield found Ryan Miller for a 20-yard score and Emeka Egbuka for a 15-yard touchdown to put the Buccaneers ahead.

Texans defensive end Danielle Hunter recorded two sacks, marking the 100th of his career, but it wasn’t enough to stop Tampa Bay’s late surge.
