300 electric buses, the first batch, will be dispatched from China
Within the next three weeks, the first shipment of thirty electric buses—part of a bigger fleet of 150—is scheduled to leave China and arrive in Karachi, marking a key milestone for the public transit system in Islamabad. In the city’s shift to environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation options, this shipment represents a turning point. The buses will be sent to the capital, where they should reach by May, after passing through customs processing.
According to people with knowledge of the situation, the buses were originally supposed to depart on Sunday, but bad weather caused them to be delayed by one day. In spite of this obstacle, plans are in place to guarantee the prompt and secure delivery of the electric buses to Islamabad.
The National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), a company that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) engaged, would manage the buses’ interim functioning once they reach the capital. Since the Convention Centre has the necessary infrastructure for charging buses, it has been decided to utilize it as the starting point for bus operations. While permanent facilities are being developed, this interim setup will allow authorities to start providing public transit services utilizing electric buses.
At Zero Point, plans are in motion to construct an exclusive depot for the electric buses that will act as a focal point for upkeep, charging, and operational logistics. The construction of this depot is in line with the city’s long-term goals to encourage environmentally friendly transportation and lower carbon emissions from public transportation.
In Islamabad’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and achieve environmental sustainability, the deployment of electric buses represents a major milestone. It highlights the city’s dedication to adopting cutting-edge solutions that give priority to greener and cleaner forms of transportation, supporting international initiatives to mitigate climate change and enhance air quality.
