Europe’s Top Clubs Shine as Liverpool Stumble in Champions League Action

In a thrilling night of European football, several of the continent’s elite clubs recorded big wins while Liverpool suffered a disappointing defeat.

Galatasaray Edges Liverpool
In Istanbul, Victor Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty secured a 1-0 win for Galatasaray, handing Liverpool their second consecutive defeat following last weekend’s Premier League loss to Crystal Palace. The English side thought they had a late equalizer when Ibrahima Konate went down in the box, but the referee overturned the penalty after a review.

Liverpool also faced a blow when goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to leave the game through injury. Substitutes Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak were unable to make the difference. “The margins were very small last season, but we were often on the right side of the score. Today, again, the margins were small—but on the wrong side,” said coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool will look to bounce back in the Premier League on Saturday against Chelsea, who themselves returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Benfica at Stamford Bridge. The only goal came in the 18th minute when Richard Rios deflected an Alejandro Garnacho cross into his own net. Chelsea held on despite a stoppage-time red card for substitute Joao Pedro. “A defeat is always a defeat, but this one can be a start for us,” said Chelsea manager José Mourinho.

Spurs Share the Spoils in Norway
Tottenham fought back to earn a 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glimt in a dramatic match north of the Arctic Circle. Jens Petter Hauge scored twice for the hosts to give them a 2-0 lead, but Micky van de Ven pulled one back for Spurs in the 68th minute. The London side grabbed a late equalizer in the 89th minute after a Nikita Haikin save deflected off Jostein Gundersen and crossed the line.

Mbappe Leads Real Madrid to Victory
Real Madrid made the long trip to Kairat Almaty and produced a 5-0 win, powered by Kylian Mbappe’s first-half penalty and two further goals, completing his hat-trick by the 73rd minute. Mbappe has now scored 60 career Champions League goals and 13 goals in nine games this season across all competitions. Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz also scored for the Spanish giants.

Bayern, Atletico, Marseille, Inter Impress
Bayern Munich ran out 5-1 winners away to Pafos in Cyprus, with Harry Kane scoring twice in the first half. Kane now has 17 goals in nine games this season. Raphael Guerreiro, Nicolas Jackson, and Michael Olise also found the net.

Atletico Madrid continued their red-hot form with a 5-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals from Giacomo Raspadori, Robin Le Normand, Antoine Griezmann, and Giuliano Simeone, plus a late penalty from Julian Alvarez, ensured a comfortable win. Griezmann’s strike marked his 200th goal for the club.

Marseille thrashed Ajax 4-0, with Igor Paixao scoring twice inside the first 12 minutes. Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added further goals.

Inter Milan eased past Slavia Prague 3-0 at San Siro, thanks to a brace from Lautaro Martinez and a goal from Denzel Dumfries. Meanwhile, Atalanta came from behind to beat Club Brugge 2-1, with Mario Pasalic netting a late winner after Lazar Samardzic’s penalty had cancelled out Christos Tzolis’ opener.

Europe’s top clubs are now hitting full stride in the group stages, setting up an exciting campaign as the Champions League heads into its next round of matches.
