Utah Valley University – Charlie Kirk, 31, the co-founder and CEO of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The incident shocked political circles across the United States.
President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death, posting on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me. Melania and I send our sympathies to his beautiful wife, Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Video shared on social media shows Kirk speaking under a white tent at the university’s Sorensen Center courtyard when a single gunshot rang out. Witnesses described panic and chaos as the crowd screamed and ran for cover. Kirk appeared to collapse after the shot, and security personnel immediately rushed him from the scene.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said a “person of interest” was briefly taken into custody Wednesday evening, though no charges were immediately filed. The individual was later released, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
Campus officials said the shot came from a distance, with one statement suggesting the gunfire originated from a building roughly 200 yards away. The university closed its campus for the rest of the day as authorities investigated.
Former Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, who attended the event, described the scene as terrifying. “He was answering a question about transgender mass shooters when the shot rang out. Charlie fell back, people hit the deck, and everyone started running,” Chaffetz told Fox News.
