‘Conjuring: Last Rites’ Haunts Box Office With Record-Breaking Opening

The latest installment in the Conjuring franchise, Last Rites, made a terrifyingly impressive debut at the box office this past weekend, raking in $83 million from 3,802 domestic theatres. This marks the third-highest domestic opening for a horror film, trailing only behind the massive hits It and It: Chapter Two.

International audiences were just as enthusiastic, contributing an additional $104 million, making it the biggest global opening for a horror movie to date.

The ninth chapter in the Conjuring universe also set a new franchise milestone, securing the largest opening weekend in the series’ history. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, though critics have been divided on the latest tale, giving it a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a ‘B’ CinemaScore from audiences.

Compared to other recent horror releases, Last Rites is a clear standout. Its opening weekend earnings nearly double those of Warner Bros. releases like Zach Cregger’s Weapons, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and Sinners.

Horror continues to prove its box office strength, with the genre crossing $1 billion globally in 2023. Upcoming sequels, including Black Phone 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, are expected to keep the momentum going.
