Devers Powers Giants Past Cubs
Devers Powers Giants to Fourth Straight Win Over Cubs
SAN FRANCISCO – Rafael Devers stole the spotlight as the San Francisco Giants rolled past the Chicago Cubs, 13-7, on Wednesday night, keeping their National League wild-card hopes alive with a fourth consecutive victory.
Devers was everywhere on the field, doubling, singling, walking, driving in five runs, and crossing home plate four times. His first-inning solo homer off Cubs starter Colin Rea set the tone for the Giants’ explosive night.
The Cubs had jumped ahead early, taking a 3-1 lead in the second inning on a three-run blast from Nico Hoerner, his fifth of the season, off Giants pitcher Carson Whisenhunt. But the Giants quickly seized control.
In the third inning, Devers added an RBI ground-rule double that helped spark a three-run rally, giving San Francisco the lead for good. He then went opposite field for a three-run homer in the sixth, stretching the lead to 10-3. Those two homers marked Devers’ 26th and 27th of the season.
The Giants weren’t done. In the fifth, they tacked on three more runs, highlighted by a bizarre play: Austin Chapman, after hitting a looping single that drove in a run, was struck on the back of the helmet by Kyle Tucker’s throw. The deflected ball sailed more than 100 feet past catcher Carson Kelly, allowing Dominic Smith to score.
Rea was pulled one batter later, having allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Chapman added a milestone solo homer in the seventh, his 18th of the season, and Heliot Ramos capped the scoring with his 16th homer.
The two-homer effort was the 21st multi-homer game of Devers’ career, and only his second with the Giants. It was also his first game with two homers, five RBIs, and four runs scored all at once.
Chapman finished with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs, while Ramos contributed two hits and three runs. Andrew Knizner also scored twice as San Francisco claimed both the series and the season series against Chicago, winning four of five matchups.
Whisenhunt pitched five strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking and striking out three. Hoerner went 2-for-3 for the Cubs, who were out-hit 13-5.
