Doha Summit Aims to Forge Unity Against Israel Amid Gaza Crisis
Doha – Arab and Islamic leaders are set to meet on Monday in an emergency summit in Doha, aiming to demonstrate regional unity and increase pressure on Israel amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Speaking ahead of his departure for Qatar, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian suggested that Islamic countries could consider cutting ties with what he called a “fake regime” while emphasizing the importance of maintaining regional cohesion. He expressed hope that the summit would “conclude” with concrete measures against Israel.
The summit will bring together key leaders, including Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Doha on Sunday to join the discussions.
Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed that the meeting will consider a “draft resolution on the Israeli attack on the State of Qatar,” signaling a serious focus on the ongoing conflict.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told Al Jazeera on Sunday that the situation has escalated beyond a simple Palestine-Israel dispute. “The biggest problem right now is Israeli expansionism in the region,” he said. “Arab and Islamic countries must come together and find a solution based on this newly defined problem.”
Qatar, which hosts the largest US military base in the region, has been playing a central mediation role in the Israel-Hamas conflict alongside the United States and Egypt.
Hamas politburo member Bassem Naim expressed hope that the summit would produce a “decisive and unified Arab-Islamic position” in response to the ongoing crisis.
