Broadway is the next stop for Robert Downey Jr

This autumn, Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr. will premiere on Broadway in a new play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar named “McNeal.”

The play, which revolves around a writer battling both personal and professional obstacles, will star Downey Jr. According to the description, Jacob McNeal, the character, is dealing with “an estranged son, a new novel, old axes to grind and an unhealthy fascination with artificial intelligence.” According to the description, “McNeal” is a “startling and wickedly smart” look into the intricacies of human nature and narrative.

The Lincoln Center Theater will host the performance, which presently stars Steve Carell as “Uncle Vanya.” Bartlett Sher, the Tony Award winner who has helmed critically acclaimed productions such as “South Pacific” and “To Kill a Mockingbird,” will be directing “McNeal.” The play will have a restricted run from September to November of 2024.

Although Downey Jr. had previously made an appearance in an off-Broadway show in 1983, this is his first time on Broadway. He recently won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan. Now, Downey Jr. is working on the television miniseries adaptation of “The Sympathizer.”

Broadway playwright Ayad Akhtar, who wrote “McNeal,” is a successful career. His drama “Disgraced” was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2012, while his play “Junk” was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2016. Also, Akhtar is putting the finishing touches on the Broadway version of the Oscar-winning musical “La La Land.”

The recent trend of Hollywood celebrities flocking to the New York stage is followed by Downey Jr.’s Broadway debut. “Uncle Vanya” is where Steve Carell is now playing, while Rachel McAdams was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in “Mary Jane” the previous season.
