EU Launches Drone Wall to Counter Russian Airspace Threats
EU Defence Ministers Prioritize ‘Drone Wall’ Amid Rising Tensions With Russia
Brussels – Defence ministers from around 10 European Union countries agreed on Friday to make the development of a so-called “drone wall” a top priority, following recent airspace violations that have rattled several member states.
The Russian Foreign Ministry responded by warning that the EU’s plans could heighten “military and political tensions on our continent,” according to state news agency RIA Novosti. Officials in Moscow dismissed the initiative as driven by “personal ambitions and political games of the EU’s ruling elites.”
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen first called for the drone wall earlier this month, just hours after NATO intercepted Russian drones over Poland. EU officials say the bloc hopes to draw lessons from Ukraine, which faces Russian drone swarms daily and has developed cost-effective ways to counter them.
Moscow, meanwhile, denied breaching NATO airspace and described the EU’s response as “hysteria,” asserting that Russian pilots follow international air navigation rules. Russian authorities also said there is no proof that any drones entering European airspace were Russian.
