Europe Scorches in 44°C Heatwave

Big Heatwave Hits Europe

France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain are facing a strong heatwave. In some places, temperatures have reached 44°C (111°F).

France’s environment minister said this kind of heat is not normal. Most parts of the country are under an orange alert, which means a serious heat risk. Only the northwest is a bit cooler. The weather office in France said the hottest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

Warnings Across Europe

This is the first major heatwave of the summer. Authorities in countries near the Mediterranean Sea are warning people to stay indoors and in cool places. Ambulances are ready near tourist spots in case of emergencies. Experts say that climate change is making such heatwaves happen more often and with more intensity.

Fires have already started in some places, like France, Turkey, and last week in Greece. Strong winds and high temperatures are making the fires worse.

Too Hot to Handle

In Spain, temperatures in the south reached 44°C on Sunday. In Madrid, a man said this kind of heat doesn’t feel normal anymore. He said it’s getting hotter every year, especially in city areas.

In Italy, 21 cities, including Rome, Milan, and Venice, are on red alert because of the heat. A tourist in Rome said her mother nearly fainted while visiting the Colosseum.

Hospitals in Italy say more people are coming in with heatstroke, especially older people, cancer patients, and those without shelter.

Heatwaves Getting Worse

In Portugal, the south, including Lisbon, was on red alert until Monday night. About two-thirds of the country is facing high danger from heat and forest fires.

Scientists say that climate change is making heat waves more common and stronger, especially in cities, where buildings trap heat.

An Italian climate expert said we should expect even hotter temperatures in the future.

Hot Weather Affects Nature Too

The heat is also causing new, dangerous fish to appear in the Mediterranean Sea. These invasive species include lionfish and venomous toadfish. They are being found off the coast of southern Italy.

In France, scientists say the extreme heat is hurting wildlife and nature badly.
