Europe Warns of Russian Drone Threat
European Leaders Warn of Rising Drone Threat, Call for Stronger Defenses
COPENHAGEN – European leaders gathered in Copenhagen under heavy security after a series of mystery drone flights in Denmark raised fresh alarms about the risk of Russia’s war in Ukraine spilling across the continent.
The summit, attended by nearly 50 countries, came amid concerns over repeated aerial incursions in Estonia and Poland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the incidents were a signal of Moscow’s readiness to escalate.
“The recent drone incidents across Europe are a clear sign that Russia still feels bold enough to escalate this war,” Zelensky said. “It was never just about Ukraine—Russia has always aimed to break the West and Europe.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the accusations, insisting Moscow posed no threat. “Just calm down,” he said, accusing Europe of fueling “hysteria” to justify higher military spending.
European leaders, however, are pushing ahead with plans to strengthen defenses, including discussions on creating a joint “drone wall” to protect their borders. Zelensky offered to share Ukraine’s battlefield expertise with European partners.
“If the Russians dare to launch drones against Poland, or violate the airspace of northern European countries, it means this can happen anywhere,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged a tougher stance, stressing that drones crossing into European airspace should be destroyed immediately. “It’s very important to have a clear message,” he said. “They can be destroyed, full stop.”
Romania’s Prime Minister Nicosur Dan, whose country has already seen drones cross over from Ukraine, issued a direct warning: the next one to enter Romanian airspace will be shot down.
