PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Frank Caprio, the longtime Providence Municipal Court judge celebrated worldwide for his kindness and compassion, has died at 87.
Caprio served nearly 40 years on the bench, earning the nickname “the nicest judge in the world” for his empathetic rulings, often delivered with warmth and humor. Clips of his courtroom moments, shared online, drew billions of views and made him an international figure.
His later years on the bench were featured on the hit television series Caught in Providence, which ran until his retirement in 2023, further cementing his reputation as a cultural icon beyond the legal world.
His death was announced on his official Instagram account, which remembered him as a man “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.” His son, David Caprio, confirmed the news in a video message.
Just a day before his passing, Caprio had shared a heartfelt video from his hospital bed, telling supporters he had suffered a setback. “I’m back in the hospital now,” he said. “I’m coming to you again, asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.”
