Gaza Hunger Crisis Worsens as Ceasefire Talks Collapse
9 More Die of Hunger in Gaza, Talks for Peace Break Down
GAZA – Nine more people have died from hunger in Gaza in the past 24 hours, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Friday. This brings the total number of deaths from malnutrition to 122 since October 2023, including at least 83 children.
The ministry called for urgent help, asking for baby milk, the opening of all border crossings, and 500 aid trucks and 50 fuel trucks per day. It also blamed Israel, the US, UK, Germany, France, and the wider world for the crisis.
Meanwhile, efforts for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have failed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former US President Donald Trump both said Hamas does not want peace.
Netanyahu said Israel is now looking at other ways to bring home the hostages and remove Hamas from Gaza. Trump said Hamas leaders would now be “hunted down” and accused them of wanting to die rather than make peace.
These comments suggest that talks for a truce may not continue soon. Many countries are worried as hunger spreads in Gaza, where most people have lost their homes.
In response, French President Emmanuel Macron said France will officially recognize Palestine as an independent state, becoming the first big Western country to do so.
The UK and Germany said they are not ready yet, but also called for an immediate ceasefire. British Prime Minister Keith Starmer said the UK will recognize Palestine only as part of a peace deal.
Trump dismissed Macron’s statement, saying, “What he says doesn’t matter… I like him, but that statement doesn’t carry weight.”
Both Israel and the US pulled out of ceasefire talks in Qatar on Thursday, just after Hamas replied to a new peace proposal. At first, it seemed Israel only paused for discussion, but Netanyahu’s latest comments show Israel’s position has become tougher.
